Your open-source distribution based on illumos, the fork of OpenSolaris.
XStreamOS is designed to offer a modern, reliable server operating system rich in enterprise technologies, combining advanced features for storage, virtualization, network management, and containerization.
Key Features
- Native ZFS file system: to ensure integrity, snapshots, compression, resilience, and efficient storage management.
- Network virtualization with Crossbow: for flexible and high-performance management of virtual networks.
- iSCSI and Fibre Channel support via COMSTAR: suitable for high-performance SAN/NAS storage infrastructures.
- Virtualization: KVM and bhyve for traditional virtual machines.
Usability and Distribution
- Simple and quick installation: a bootable ISO/USB image is available for system installation.
- Out-of-the-box configuration: after installation, a default privileged user (“sonicle”) is present with password “sonicle”, which must be changed. The user has special permissions via pfexec.
- Updatable package system: the default IPS publisher is already configured for updates and additional packages.
Relationship with Other Sonicle Products
XStreamOS is the technological foundation for two main products:
- XStream Collaboration
- XStream Storage
These products leverage XStreamOS capabilities to offer complete solutions in their respective areas (collaboration, file/data management, storage infrastructure, etc.).
Open Source & Collaborations
- The source code of the kernel (derived from illumos) is available on GitHub as Sonicle’s official fork.
- You can actively participate in the project through the official mailing lists, for reports, contributions, and support.
